Caudal Valley: Mining Territory by bike

Description

The Caudal Valley is a territory where the mining history of Asturias is mixed with the wildest and most accessible nature. Old work roads, tunnels and forest tracks have been transformed into routes that invite you to explore an environment full of contrasts: chestnut and oak forests, panoramic peaks and villages with an identity deeply linked to coal and mountains. Here, every pedal stroke is a journey through Asturias' industrial memory, with landscapes that alternate between the natural and the human. The routes in this area allow you to enjoy both the tranquility of family trails and the challenge of technical ascents and dynamic descents. The Caudal offers a complete experience for those seeking adventure, sport and local culture in one place. From the surroundings of Mieres, starting point of many routes, to the heights of Coto Bello or Pico Polio, visitors can enjoy 360º panoramic views over the central valleys of Asturias and discover the strength of a land that transformed its mining past into a paradise for cycling tourism. Along the way you will find recreational areas, viewpoints, lush forests and old mining remains, now integrated into the landscape. It is an invitation to pedal slowly, breathe the fresh mountain air and feel how the Caudal Valley beats between history and nature.

Itinerary

Itinerary - Caudal Valley: Mining Territory

The itinerary through the Caudal Valley offers three complementary routes that allow you to discover the essence of this Asturian region from different levels of demand. All of them share the same common thread: the mining legacy, the natural beauty and the thrill of mountain biking.

🌳 Coto Bello - Familiar

Level: Easy
Distance: 8-15 km (round trip)
Elevation gain: 200-450 m
Estimated duration: 3 hours
Terrain: Asphalted and compact
Suitable for: Gravel / touring bike / mountain bike
📍 Meeting point: Alto Coto Bello, Aller.

An accessible and quiet route perfect for families or cyclists who want to enjoy the scenery without great physical demands. The route climbs gently along a forest track surrounded by chestnut and oak forests to the recreational area of Coto Bello, with picnic areas and rest areas ideal for a break.
The descent is along the same path, offering a safe and scenic ride through nature and memories of the mining past.

🌲 Coto Bello - Circular

Level: Intermediate
Distance: 15-25 km (round trip)
Elevation gain: 600-800 m
Estimated duration: 4 hours
Terrain: Mixed (asphalt, compacted earth, trails)
Suitable for: Mountain bike / e-bike
📍 Meeting point: Alto Coto Bello, Aller.

Extended version of the family itinerary that adds sections through forest trails and irregular tracks, combining nature and technique. The route includes several points with loose rocks and sharp turns, which require attention and balance, especially during the descent.
It is an ideal option for medium level groups looking for a little more excitement without going into extreme terrain, enjoying spectacular views and natural shaded areas throughout the route.

⛰️ Pico Polio - Mining Challenge

Level: Advanced
Distance: 30-35 km (round trip)
Elevation gain: 1000-1100 m
Estimated duration: 5 hours
Terrain: Technical (ascents, descents, single track, rock, roots)
Suitable for: Mountain bike / e-bike
📍 Meeting point: Pico Polio - Apeadero Renfe, Mieres.

The most demanding route of the itinerary and a real adventure for experienced cyclists. The ascent to Pico Polio (1,338 m) is a physical and technical challenge, with steep slopes and stretches of uneven terrain.
From the summit, you can enjoy a 360° view over the central valleys of Asturias, a landscape where the old mining shafts coexist with the surrounding forests and mountains. The descent requires technique and concentration, especially in the rocky and rooty sections.
A route designed for those looking to excel and experience mountain biking in its most authentic version.

Each of these routes offers a different way to experience the Caudal Valley: from a family ride to a high mountain sporting challenge. Three itineraries, the same spirit: pedaling through the living history of Asturias.
